What it means to be a member.

When you join LMCU, you do more than open an account. You become a co-owner of a member-owned credit unionThat's not a line. It's a legal structure. FAQs

credit union is a member-owned financial cooperative — which means when you join, you become a co-owner, not just a customer. Credit union membership typically requires opening a savings account (called a share account) with a small deposit. In exchange, you get access to the full product suite — and any profits the institution earns get returned to members through better rates and lower fees, not distributed to outside shareholders.

LMCU membership is open to people who live, work, worship or attend school anywhere in Michigan’s lower peninsula or Florida, or you can also join from anywhere if you contribute $5 to the ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis) Foundation. If you're not sure whether you qualify, we can help you confirm eligibility before you apply. Visit a branch, schedule an appointment, or use the chat feature at lmcu.org.

Joining LMCU is a three-step process: confirm your eligibility, open a Member Savings account to establish your membership share, and fund it with a small initial deposit. You can join our credit union online at lmcu.org, stop into any LMCU branch, or schedule an appointment. Once you're a member, you can add checking, apply for loans, and explore all available products.

Yes. LMCU membership is established through a Member Savings account, which represents your ownership share in the credit union. This is standard practice at credit unions and is different from product-bundling requirements you might find at a bank. The savings account is the foundation of your membership — not a condition of getting better rates.

Yes. LMCU is federally insured by the NCUA (National Credit Union Administration), which means your deposits are insured up to $250,000 per depositor — the same protection the FDIC provides at banks. You can learn more about NCUA share insurance coverage at ncua.gov.

To become an LMCU member, you just need to meet one of the following criteria:

  • You live, work, or worship anywhere in Michigan's lower peninsula, or anywhere in Florida.
  • Regardless of where you live, you can join if you’re an immediate family member of a current LMCU member. This includes your father, mother, brother, sister, son, daughter, grandmother, grandfather, or spouse.
  • You can also join from anywhere if you contribute $5 to the ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis) Foundation.
