Good questions. Here are some good answers.
Everything you've wondered about savings accounts, rates, and how LMCU accounts work — answered plainly.
Think of it this way: a savings account is your everyday jar — accessible anytime, earning interest while it waits. A money market account is a bigger jar with a lid you can still open — higher earning potential for larger balances, with check-writing access. A CD is a sealed jar with a timer — you commit your funds for a set term, lock in a fixed rate, and earn more in exchange for leaving it alone. The right one depends on how soon you need the money and how much you want to earn while it sits.
Most LMCU savings accounts have no monthly fees and no minimum balance requirement. Max Savings, Max Money Market, Member Savings, Kids Club, and Teen Club all fall into that category. The one account with a minimum opening deposit is our Certificate of Deposit — $500 to open. Otherwise, you won't find hoops to jump through here. Check the individual product pages for the specifics on any account.
Yes. LMCU is federally insured by the National Credit Union Administration (NCUA). That means your deposits are protected up to $250,000 per depositor, per ownership category — the same level of protection you'd get at any FDIC-insured bank. It's a quiet but important thing to know: your money is safe here.
There's no single right answer, but the general rule is: keep your emergency fund somewhere accessible, low-friction, and earning a competitive rate. You don't want to have to think twice about getting to it in a pinch — so a CD isn't the right fit. Max Savings or Member Savings, both with no minimum balance and no monthly fees, are solid starting points. The goal isn't to maximize returns on your emergency fund. It's to make sure it's there when you need it.
APY stands for Annual Percentage Yield — it's the real-world rate your money earns over a year, including the effect of compounding. The higher the APY, the more your balance grows without you doing anything. A savings account earning 4.00% APY on a $10,000 balance earns roughly $400 in a year. A standard bank account earning 0.01% earns about $1. The math isn't complicated. The difference is real. Current LMCU savings rates are always available at lmcu.org/rates.
It does. Kids Club is for children 12 and under. Teen Club picks up at 13 and runs through 17. Both earn up to 3.00% APY on balances up to $1,000 — which is a genuinely high rate for accounts designed to teach saving, not just hold money. A parent or guardian needs to be a joint account holder, and you'll need the child's social security card to open one. It's one of the easier things you'll do for your kid's financial future.
