Interior
- Check your basement and any crawlspaces for standing water, dripping, or signs of water damage.
- Clean the exhaust hose and vent of your dryer. Built-up lint is a common cause of house fires.
- Vacuum your refrigerator and freezer coils to keep things running smoothly.
- Clean your exhaust fan outlets and screens for greater efficiency.
- Check all of your air filters and replace them if necessary.
Exterior
- Check for any damage to your roof. If there’s visible moisture or discoloration in your attic, your roof might be leaking. When in doubt, have a professional come out for an inspection.
- If the paint on your siding or trim is peeling, you might need a fresh coat or two of weather-protectant paint.
- Check for drafts around your windows and doors. The tighter the seal, the lower your energy bill (especially come next winter, and yes, there will be a next winter).
Yard
- Check for signs of rodents and other pests. Such as ants or termites. Contact a professional if you see anything suspicious.
- Clean debris from gutters and downspouts. Make sure rain water drains away from your home.
- Trim any overhanging tree branches and shrubs that could fall and crash into your home.
A little TLC now could save you from a money pit later.
